Why it matters

Backup is boring until the day it isn't

Four ordinary Tuesdays that cost a small business a week of work. Getting you back from each of them is the whole job.

A laptop is lost or stolen

The work is already in your storage. Hand the person a new laptop, restore onto it, and they carry on. The backup belongs to the work, not to the hardware that was stolen.

A server dies overnight

You can look through its backups and recover them without that server being switched on, or even still existing. This is the case Satkosh is built around.

Someone deletes the wrong folder

Pick yesterday, or last March. Put the folder back where it was, or somewhere else, without disturbing anything around it.

Ransomware gets into the network

It can encrypt what sits on your machines. It cannot touch a backup you have locked: for the period you set, that copy cannot be changed or deleted by anyone, even with your passwords in hand. You go back to the last clean one.

    Copy a code from the console, run the installer, and that machine is protected. There is no backup server to buy, rack or look after first.

Common questions

The things people ask us first

Where does our backup data actually go?

Straight from the machine to the storage you chose: your own cloud storage, a drive in your office, or storage bought from us and kept in India. It is encrypted and compressed before it leaves the machine. Whichever you pick, it never passes through a Serverstock server on the way.

Do we have to bring our own storage?

No, but you can. If you already pay for cloud storage, point Satkosh at it and you pay us nothing for capacity. If you would rather not think about storage at all, buy it from us and we keep it in India, charged per GB. Backups work exactly the same either way, and you can switch later without starting again.

What does your server hold, then?

Records about your backups, and the key needed to write to your storage. The records are what ran, when, how long it took, how much moved and whether it worked. The key is held encrypted. We never hold the contents of your files, and never even their names.

Do you protect against ransomware?

We do not scan for it or block it on your machines. That is antivirus, a different product, and we will not pretend otherwise. What we do is make sure ransomware cannot destroy the copy you recover from. Backups leave the machine encrypted, and you can lock them for a period you choose. During that period nothing can delete or change them: not an attacker, not someone holding your stolen password, and not us.

Can you restore onto a different machine if the original is destroyed?

Yes, and this is the case Satkosh is built around. The backup belongs to the work, not to the hardware, so a replacement machine can recover everything the destroyed one held. Because moving data between machines is also something an attacker would like to do, it asks you to sign in again, raises a high-priority alert, emails the people you nominated, and is written to the audit trail.

What happens if a backup fails, or a machine is switched off?

You hear about it. A failed backup raises an alert and emails you. A machine that stops checking in is reported as offline. A backup that was scheduled and can no longer happen is recorded as missed, so a week of downtime reads as a week of gaps rather than an unbroken row of green ticks. Failing quietly is the worst thing a backup product can do, and most of the design goes into preventing it.
